Holding the L2 button raises your guard, and locks you onto the nearest lockable foe. Fighting as a Warden, the Knight faction's all-arounder, a brief tutorial caught me up on the lock-on and guard system, which turns out to be the axis along which all the combat revolves. Sure, when you're fighting the enemy rank-and-file, it feels like a straightforward power-fantasy, but once you start facing off against the more notable warriors of the opposing army, For Honor turns into a nuanced duel that gave my brain as much to do as my fingers. That said, mindless aggression isn't the name of the game, as is immediately apparent when you begin learning the ins and outs of its combat. As we got to see in yesterday's trailer for the campaign, For Honor's various factions have been at each other's throats since time immemorial, and Apollyan, the narrator and apparent orchestrator of the continued strife is bent on ensuring that the blood keeps flowing. At first glance, it may well seem that For Honor is all about cracking skulls and putting axes to faces, that's precisely what it's about.
